Dear Family of Mary!
O Adonai, and Leader of the house of Israel, you appeared to Moses in the flame of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: come, and with an outstretched arm, redeem us. (Traditional "O" Antiphon)
"Adonai" means "Lord" in Hebrew. It is plural, for emphasis, but refers only to God. This title for God was always spoken when the Name of God, YHWH, was written in the Torah. So this was the title for God that was always heard in the Temple or the Synagogue. The Lord was the one who, through Moses, led the Israelites out of Egypt, through the 40 years in the desert, into the Promised Land. The Lord was their Leader.
In this Antiphon, we ask our Leader, Adonai, to come and lead us to redemption and into eternal life. Our Lady speaks of God as our Leader in this message from 2006:
"Dear children! Also today I call you to pray, pray, pray. Little children, when you pray you are close to God and He gives you the desire for eternity. This is a time when you can speak more about God and do more for God. Therefore, little children, do not resist but permit Him to lead you, to change you and to enter into your life. Do not forget that you are travelers on the way toward eternity. Therefore, little children, permit God to lead you as a shepherd leads his flock. Thank you for having responded to my call."(November 25, 2006)
We are travelers on the way toward eternity. We need to be led by Jesus, out of our own personal "Egypt" of sin, on to the way to eternal life in holiness! Our Lady is here to help us follow Jesus. She is with us during this Advent, to help us to focus on her Son, the Good Shepherd. She urges us to pray, pray, pray, so that we will not resist Adonai when He calls us to move forward with Him into holiness and life.
With Mary's help, we can learn to follow Jesus, as the sheep follow their shepherd. We can learn the silence of heart that is necessary in order to hear His voice when He calls us. St. Faustina trusted in Our Lady to help her to do this very thing. She wrote:
Advent is approaching. I want to prepare my heart for the coming of the Lord Jesus by silence and recollection of spirit, uniting myself with the Most Holy Mother and faithfully imitating Her virtue of silence, by which She found pleasure in the eyes of God Himself. I trust, that by Her side, I will persevere in this resolution. (1398, Diary)
By Mary's side, we can persevere. We can learn from Her the silence of heart that will open us to the guidance and leadership of God. We are in good hands with Mother Mary!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
